This year, we’re excited to share that our friends at Google have pledged to match all donations made by June 30th up to $10,000. Crayons to Calculators has never depended more on community, individual, and corporate donations. Will you help us make the match and raise $20,000 for school supplies?
This year Crayons to Calculators will operate a little differently than usual. Being mindful of public health guidelines and with the safety of our students top of mind, we’re unable to collect school supplies or utilize volunteers. But we’ll still be providing backpacks full of school supplies to over 11,000 students in need.

Due to the uncertainties of the pandemic, this year’s Crayons to Calculators program will operate similarly to 2020, without the community collecting school supplies or volunteering to assemble backpacks. While we love that element of the program, we have health and safety as our top priorities and will be distributing the backpacks and supplies in pre-packaged kits directly through Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley schools.
There are three ways you can help us provide school supplies to students in need:
Any individual, local business or organization may join the community challenge! We encourage both individuals and businesses to build teams and fundraise for our local students. Register here.
The contents of each new backpack varies by district and grade level and school district, but are based on supply lists that schools provide. Based on grade level, backpacks include supplies like headphones, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, notebooks, binders, watercolors and brushes, glue, rulers, scissors, folders and more!
This program serves low-income students in the Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District whose families cannot afford to buy school supplies. Any student in need in one of these district schools should contact their school to learn how they can get a backpack full of school supplies.
There are over 11,000 students in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts who qualify for free and reduced lunch, an indicator of poverty. The cost of basic school supplies, approximately $75 per student, presents a financial burden for many of these families.
Crayons to Calculators aims to cut that cost and move one step closer to eliminating the opportunity gap that persists between low-income students and their higher-income peers. Starting the year with school supplies is a critical first step to helping boost or sustain a student’s academic performance. It also enables schools to operate more effectively.
School supply kits and backpacks will be delivered to the Boulder Valley School District and St. Vrain Valley School District in early August. Once the supply kits are put inside the backpacks, they’ll be delivered directly to local schools for distribution.

Crayons to Calculators is not a standalone organization. This program is managed by two local non-profit organizations, Impact on Education and the St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation. Our program benefits students in the Boulder Valley School District and the St. Vrain Valley School District.
Impact on Education is the program fiduciary, managing all tax and financial needs for the program. All donations are tax-deductible, and tax receipts will be issued by Impact on Education.
